Lamps from natural materials - trend

Did you notice a massive return of furniture, accessories and lamps made out bent wood ? You can find them in almost every interior brand from H&M home , Tinekhome or Bloomingville. Last year Piet Hein Eek designed the limited-edition range for IKEA called Jassa. A collection of furniture and homeware based on traditional Indonesian and Vietnamese crafts. Seagrass and water hyacinth alongside bent bamboo, all the items represent a fusion of handmade aesthetics and mass-production techniques. I see all these products as a part of the trend called - Scandi Boho Style. It is the combination of Scandinavian simplicity and brightness, and the creative and artful touch of the Bohemian style. The key to every bohemian home is the mix&match of unique finds, vintage and ethnic objects and original fabrics.
Products made from natural materials fit just so perfect in this trend as they add a warmer and welcoming touch into a little bit cold Scandinavian white interiors. These lamps are also perfect if you love minimalism but want to add some more texture and soul into your home.

Grey&Yellow in children’s rooms

Here we go - from yellow accents in children's rooms into the entire wall painted in this color.  I particularly like the combination of Yellow with Grey, as they balance each other so well. Rooms with different shades of grey are most of the time calm and sophisticated, but a touch of yellow brings the interior to life in mine opinion. You could paint one furniture in yellow to create an eye catcher in the room or use just little accessories like lamps, pillows, blankets or bedding. Painting an entire wall in yellow is a big step, probably better for play corner than for sleeping.
A yellow accent here and there is definitely in Rafa-kids style.
Happy Yellow new week!

Today is the official first day of summer for my sons, as it’s the last school day…. we have 6 weeks to go! I’m not that excited as they are, unfortunately, as we can’t take such a long break from work so we will try to find a good way to spend time with our boys and work in-between. It is always a challenge! The days are lighter and warmer, so spending time with our two active boys is much easier as we can plan different activities outside. Slow mornings are definitely my favorite with no school rush. …anyway, today I’m showing you sunny photo session created for Zara by April and May. I really like the simplicity of it. It shows that you don’t need many accessories to create beautiful pictures with a summer feeling. Let’s take this idea into our summer days.

Rafa-kids family

Today we are all here - RAFA family.
Do you know that the name RAFA comes from the first letters of our names?
Robert - Agata - Frank and Arek.

We started our brand with the design of 2 beds - F bunk bed and R toddler bed. It was something that we needed for our boys at that time. Two boys who shared a single room. Time flies and the kids grow, right?  In the mean time, our customers also started to ask for a larger bed which could fit under the Rafa bunk bed. We listened. The 200cm long A teen bed was a great new addition to the family. However, the questions about even a larger bed did not stop coming. We listened again. A120 wide bed, which you can fit under the F bunk bed was born - I am afraid it is not the end of this story, as we started to get requests for a bed for parents !!! ….we still don't know which way we will grow...but the customers are right most of the time!

It is the last post this month as we are taking a Summer break and will be not around until mid - August. Our boys will need to go back to school late August, and then life and work will run as usual. We are truly a family brand and live with the rhythm of our two little monkeys.
We wish you well and hope for great Summer days.

Today I wanted to share with you few pictures from our summer family days. We are so lucky to have a grandpa who lives in the countryside surrounded by forest and fields. These quiet and peaceful days are ideal for our urban boys. We didn't plan any special activities for those days; we’ve let it all go. We were also bored sometimes! It is so great to walk every morning and evening in the forest.  Our younger son is fascinated by animals at the moment.  Each walk is an adventure for him, and he likes to discover all the little insects around. Sometimes at the evening boys made a bonfire. We ate outside. Simple summer things we enjoy so much. It was warm, sunny and so relaxing for all of us.

BB120 Bench by Rafa-kids

This time Rafa-kids imagined a room where you can move furniture around and set it differently.

Let’s ride around with the R toddler bed. Would you like to put it under the F bunk bed? It is then a very compact sleeping arrangement for your kids.  The other day you can easily transport the toddler bed into a corner of the room. This way you will get an extra space under the bunk bed for playing time.  Let’s surprise the kids!  You can also move the bed into parents room if necessary… It’s so easy with the wheels of the R toddler bed
Then we can play with our NEW BB120 bench.  Nicely expose it under the window.  A few days later move it under the F bunk bed…any solution is possible!
Rafa-kids furniture is so elegant that you will enjoy to look and play with it together with your kids. Trust us.

Could we call this room Bohemian chic? Rafa is not afraid to use colors and like unique items which make the place so special.  We created this space in collaboration with few wonderful brands.
Thank you for letting us use your products :

I had an eye on this amazing Forest Wallpaper by INKE
and like so much all that Dutch bran Esthex do, we got from them, Philip frog & Harry egel.
Donna's Willson work fascinates and inspires us for a long time - we got this, one of a kind,
Acorns Pillows and beautiful Cups with Animals.

There are moments when your heart starts to beat a bit faster seeing an e-mail lending in your post box. Two months ago, we received a message from Stockholm. Rafa was asked to take part of H&M kids photo campaign.  B bench together with few Felt pillows flew to Sweden. We were very exited, but we needed to wait to see the final results for more than two months.

It is just life!
You can see it in the  Worldwide campaigns of the H&M kids
Rafa-kids is very proud and happy to be part of it.

The collection is called Ready to Play, and it is a baby online exclusive collection. Made from carefully selected materials in comfy, play-friendly fits. It’s a shame my boys are too big for it! I like the fact that this collection suits boys and girls alike. The beautiful Autumn colors and textures are matching so perfectly our Rafa-kids wooden B bench

Bobo Choses collection AW17

Do you remember my blog post about the Sea Theme in children's rooms posted here?
Well, it is looking like this trend is about to stay for longer and take much wider context.
The subject dedicated to the protection of the Sea is not very new, as we struggle with the environmental issues for a long time. It's good to see that more and more brands would like to be involved. I still remember impressive collection from 2015 run by Pharrell Williams with G-Star RAW. Denim garments were made using recycled plastic removed from the oceans. It was an initiative that encouraged creatives to repurpose ocean waste and raise awareness to the growing issue. It is looking like the children brands also continue this subject.

Bobo Choses newest collection AW17 is an ode to saving the oceans. They say: “ Dear World, Autumn Winter 2017/18 collection is inspired by the sea and all the beautiful things it contains for us. It also raises the question of how should we relate to it in a sustainable way. “
The new collection AW17 Ferm Living is also inspired by the sea. I hope all these actions are great impulses to talk about the waste problem in the seas with our children. Let’s raise conscious young people.

I’m always glad to find one of a kind interior projects which fulfill specific needs of people. This time we have a look into a world of Anne and Hubert which with the arrival of their second child, Basile, needed to rethink the space of their children's rooms. Originally, the room of their first boy, Martin, was small and under a low ceiling. They asked creators of the site Hellocoton for help. There are a few words about the project :

“ We were inspired by the apartments of Le Corbusier by integrating a large sliding door of 1m90 in length between the two rooms. Thus, children have two separate bedrooms but can also enjoy a large space to play together. When the door is open, there is a great perspective between the two rooms. (…) The two rooms were entirely painted white. To warm it up, we imagined light wood furniture punctuating the spaces and bringing large storage areas for all the toys and clothes of the two boys. The heart of the project lies in this large piece of furniture which follows the slope of the roof. It truly emphasizes the volumes and space in these two new rooms. “
I hope you like this project as much as I do. I adore the feeling of openness and light going through boys rooms. Selection of natural materials and colors is also so serene and calming. Definitely a project to remember if you plan a custom made renovation.

Travel to Paris

to Paris!
I know how cliche it sounds, but it is so true! When my good friend told me she is going to Paris for work and would like to have some company, I just couldn’t say no. Visiting the city and also the Maison&Object fair at the same time was a great deal. We stayed at a lovely, newly open hotel CitizenM. If you like modern design and would like to be close to the center - that’s a good place I can recommend.

We walked around the city, where there is so many charming little cafes, restaurants, stores that you would like to hang out forever. Few of my favorite ones this time in Le Marias:
Mona Market, Borgo Delle Tovaglie, of course, Merci and delicious pizza at Grazie just next door. On my way to Smallable store, by coincident, I came across little boutique called Milk on the Rock. Do you know this brand? It is a NY kids fashion brand which I like as they always have a great selection for boys till 14 years old! It was a pleasure to have a little chat there and get some presents for my sons. I also always put on my list the department store Le Bon Marché, which will give you a touch of French luxury. Get your coffee and look at this charming city, it’s all I needed at the end….

I am a person who has a weakness for industrial style in an interior decor. I would love to live in an old factory, have this massive metal doors and old factory lamps, you know? You can find my Pinterest page called Industrial-style here, to have more feeling what I talk about. I would combine it with a minimal modern touch for a good balance.

Using old industrial elements in kids rooms is not that popular, but it’s worth to try in my option. It matches so well with other natural colors and textures of wood, linen, and wool. Playing with contrasts will help to create playfully and one of a kind room. All these pictures, which I was so excited to spot at Paulina Arcklin blog are a great example. Take it as inspiration to experiment at home and try to look at things a bit differently while decorating kids space.

Kids space inspiration

Last Tuesday we went to look for inspiration at the biggest Design and Interior Fair in The Netherlands called - VT wonen&design Beurs taking place in Amsterdam. In 2016 I showed you space for kids, where the Dutch magazine vtwonen created their pavilion - here. This year the space for kids was again designed by one of the vtwonen stylist Corrien Flohil. You can see straight away that she is a boys mom! The dark Autumn atmosphere in this space was lifted up with accents in red and mustard. In the middle of the room was stood a bed built from drawers, which of course is a great storage idea. My favorite element in this room was the wall decoration with different sized boxes. It is a great way to expose all the little personal treasures of your child. On the other side of the room, Carrien arranged two working spaces, with many vintage and industrial elements. I listed few stores selling this kind of products below if you are interested. Even if you don’t like dark rooms for children, I think you can find interesting ideas to try, for a cozy and personal child's room.

It’s so quiet here since a while. In 2017 I wrote the smallest number of posts since I started blogging. I think a lot of my energy went into Rafa-kids Instagram account, as it seems more direct and spontaneous way of connecting with people than blogging. It doesn’t mean I would like to stop my blog, but I need to find more time for it daily, and it’s just so difficult…does anyone know a trick to make the day longer than 24h?

Today I would like you to take some time and enjoy

it was designed by Asia Gwis - Kawka
This time it is an energetic catalog with a strong touch of yellow and dots patterns. We like this playful character of our third lookbook and are excited to get back to working with Asia. I hope you like the combination of simplicity of our bench and the world we created around it.

Residence house in NY

Today we go very far away to see a weekend home for a family of six. Why? We spotted Rafa-kids design in kids’ room and we are glad to show it to you!
First a bit about this modern place designed around family gatherings both large and small.

“ …. The idea was to curate an environment that reflected a simpler life outside of New York City, with furnishings that align with the natural surroundings and feel right all year long. The house is in a quiet town in the Hamptons, close to town as well as to the beach. (…) clients wanted a house just large enough to accommodate their extended family and friends in a comfortable, cozy way…”

I can directly see that the interiors are warm and functional, with ‘less is more’ idea in mind and every object fits perfectly and feels just right. Many of the pieces were custom made and carefully sourced from small furniture makers. Yes, we are one of them! If you look carefully into the children’s room, you will spot our S shelves perfectly accommodated above the kid's beds. The use of the wallpaper is very dominant in this room, but I’m sure the kids love their sea theme atmosphere. You can find more about this project here: with a special thank you:  Styling Katja Greef and Photography Nicole Franzen.

Rafa-kids R toddler bed

Today it will be a bit emotional post as the little bed you see on the pictures used to belong to our son. We designed Rafa-kids R toddler bed for our younger boy - Robert. He slept in it for few years, and now it was time to move into a bigger bed. I think many parents understand this a bit difficult moment when you have to accept the fact, that there is no more  ‘little baby’ in the house.

Andrea is a landscaper and mother of three kids, Teo is 7 years old, Olivia 5 and Mauro is 2. Maybe you already know her from her beautiful IG - Teoyolivia.  Her family lives in Galicia, in the north part of Spain. They are now a happy owner of Rafa-kids R toddler bed and Mauro can sleep in it. I'm so glad to see the room so beautify decorated. This is definitely how I see Rafa-kids furniture, passed from family to family, and from one generation to other. It is only possible for these special objects, which are well made from good quality materials, and of course taken good care off.

I’m coming back with my regular Monday series about decorating the children’s rooms! I have a lot of new energy and would like to start with the colorful and airy theme - Hot Air Balloons. I see them here and there, but today I have gathered some interesting examples of how to decorate children’s rooms with them.  Don't you think an Air Balloon is such a great symbol of traveling and exploring new places around the world?  It took me some time to find a company which produces them, but there is a Dutch brand called - Authenticmodels which makes great ones. One or two Balloons in a child’s space looks already very nice, but we could also make a statement and hang plenty of them for the wow effect.  As you can see they look great in a nursery room, toddler room or even pre-teener spaces. I could put them in any corner of my home as I find them a great element to use.
I wish you a great new week!

Soft Autumn with Rafa-kids - A teen bed
A teen bed with soft pillows headboard

The days are getting colder and darker. I feel like I want to hide in my bed for few months and wake up in Spring. Autumn is not my favorite time of the year, unfortunately. In our last photo session for Rafa-kids I wanted to bring a bit of sunny and comfortable atmosphere inside our studio. A teen bed in natural wood is complemented with soft natural tones of white, grey and just a bit of mustard. Perfect cozy corner with modern simplicity style.

I discovered the Nomad Felt cushions some time ago, and I knew how I would like to use them. Create a playful headboard above Rafa-kids bed. Most of the headboards available on the market are a bit boring to use, and I wanted to have something more playful and fit our style.  Nomad felt pillows are strong enough as you lean on them. It is also easy to hang them and take them off if you would like to sit on the floor. Please welcome in our collection the beautiful New Felt balls - which will cheer up your mood.  A small imaginative ball fits so perfectly into your hands, and oh yes into the hands of your child. We hope you like our cozy room for this dark autumn evening.

Custom designed kid’s room in Australia
Some time ago I showed you this very nice: Custom designed room, and it’s looking like you've liked it!  Today I have another great example how to create modern kid's room. When Angelika and Andreas Zenkl moved to Sydney’s Paddington they asked a designer, Angy Ertel of Ertel Design to create a playful and functional space for their daughters, Aimee and Camille.

It was tricky to fit in a bunk bed, desk and lots storage but still leave space for play”.  Aimee and Camille’s room was designed with storage in mind, with its mix of open and closed shelving. Large toy drawers under the shelving units and bench seat…  “Since it’s a quite a small space, I wanted everything to connect” says Any. Books and toys are displayed on open shelving, with a gap below and section to allow it to be used as an extra desk. Angy about the design of the bunk bed:  “ I designed it with flexibility in mind so that if the girls don’t want to share further down the track, the top bunk can be removed and the room will still look great. A drawer under the bed holds a mattress for sleepovers.“
Do you like this compact and elegant space?
It’s a great example that even when we don’t have plenty of space, with good ideas we can create a unique room for our kids. Well done!

Rafa-kids F&A bed set

Did you like our Autumn session with Rafa-kids A teen bed? We are coming back to you with even more inspiration in a similar atmosphere. For the first time, we've set our Rafa-kids F&A bed set in two different wood fishes. I think they look stunning and even more playful than the beds in the same tone. This way you can create a separate atmosphere on the upper and lower bed.

If one child has the F&A bed set, the lower A teen bed can be used for lying, sitting or chilling out during the day and the upper part is only for sleeping, ( you don’t need to make the bed each day then!) and of course, it can be used for sleepovers. Many of our customers ask what is the difference between the whitewash and natural wood finish. I hope you can see on the pictures, that the whitewash has a warm tone but the wooden structure is hardly visible, and the wood fish has a structure of wood more present. You can see it so well on the last picture with Rafa-kids BB bench 120cm

Rafa-kids also collected plenty of beautiful new accessories. Please welcome the cutest ever Mini Birdie from LuckyBoySunday, playful Felt Balls, and new Nomad Cushions. I also found this lovely Corona wool blanket which is so light and warm at the same time.  We are also a bit obsessed at Rafa-kids with the mustard color at the moment, and that’s why we have now in our collection this beautiful Mustard Bedding set. Last but not least, our storage is filled with plenty of new felt baskets….in White, Soft Pink and Yellow!  We like winter season with a bit of bright and colorful touch.

I really like the house you see in the pictures.  Created by German photographer Petra Reger who runs her studio Wertvoll Fotografie from a converted factory in Southern Germany. You can read a little interview with her here: and also snap much more pictures at Stylejuicer blog. It is one of my favorite blogs if I look for inspiration and need a bit of a WOW feeling.

Today I would like to talk about a small furniture which deserved a bit of a shoutout.
What do you think about a bench in your home?

In many cases, we don’t even notice them around if we look at interiors. I have a filling that a bench is mostly used in a hallway to sit and put your shoes on, to put the necessary accessories, or hide shoe collection under it. There are so many other ways to use a bench around our home. I love the picture with the bench in a living room next to the white sofa. Perfect to put your cup of tea or coffee and book you are currently reading. Benches are most of the time long and sleek, which makes them so easy to fit in many different rooms. What about putting it next to the wall?  Then you can use your creativity and create wall art or green corner with flowers, put your favorite magazines, the longer the bench, the more possibilities. It doesn’t matter if you have a small or large space, it is such a smart furniture which can give a personal touch to a room. I hope you like the ideas and appreciate this little object even more!

This week our kids have a little winter break from school.
We're excited to welcome cold days and the natural ice on the Rotterdam's canals!
I think we'll put on skates very soon....

For the cozy evenings, I have some beautiful treat for your eyes. I think it doesn’t happen that often that stylist/photographer which mostly works with interior design sets, is interested in kids interiors.  What a shame!
You probably already know that I’m a fan of Paulina Arcklin work and adore her style.  Today I share with you few of her great ideas for kids rooms from her Kidsnapit concept. We are also very proud to see our Rafa-kids bench in her styling.  Please note: we still offer BB bench for a special price

I’m moving!
Yes, after 7 years of blogging over here I found my new spot on Rafa-kids New Website.

You can find the New RAFA-kids blog over HERE
https://www.rafa-kids.com/blog/

It was not an easy decision, as I can't take with me all the posts I have created during these years. If I look back at the work and passion I put into it I think it would be great to print it as a book about design world for children.

I will unpack my things and create a new cozy and fresh place over at Rafa-kids websiteYou can expect to see there few of your favorite blog posts, so you can still feel familiar.  It's somehow a new start for me.  I will do my best to continue this creative and inspiring Blog.
Are you joining the Journey?
